Chennai, Dec 28: Veteran actor and DMDK chief Vijayakanth (71) breathed his last at a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday. He was on ventilator support after testing positive for Covid-19.

The hospital released an official statement confirming the demise of Captain Vijayakanth, revealing, "Due to pneumonia, Captain Vijayakanth was reliant on ventilatory support. Despite the unwavering efforts of the medical team, he passed away on the morning of December 28, 2023."

Initially admitted for a routine health examination on Tuesday, Vijayakanth's health took a sudden downturn. This unfortunate event comes after his hospitalization in November for respiratory issues.

Worth mentioning, he held the esteemed position of Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
