Champua, Aug 21: In a tragic incident in the Champua Range of Keonjhar district, an elderly woman was trampled to death by an elephant late Wednesday night.
The incident occurred when a herd of approximately 30 elephants, including one tusker, entered several villages under the Jyotipur village, including Bardhana, Ankudi, Niundi, Khuntapada, and Tangarapada, creating widespread panic. The elephants caused significant damage by breaking into houses, with the tusker attacking the elderly woman in Bardhana village.
The deceased, identified as Sharadha Khilara, was rescued by forest department personnel and rushed for medical treatment to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Locals remain in a state of fear due to the ongoing elephant disturbances, as the tusker is currently roaming the Niundi forest area, heightening anxiety in the region.
Forest officials are working to manage the situation, but the threat of further attacks remains a concern for the affected villages.
