In the first week of August each year, the world comes together to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week—a time dedicated to promoting the profound benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers alike. This global observance not only underscores the nutritional advantages of breast milk but also highlights its role in fostering emotional bonds and supporting long-term health outcomes. As we commemorate this week, we recognize the pivotal role that breastfeeding plays in laying the foundation for a healthy future, one nourishing drop at a time.
Importance of breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is not just a feeding method; it is a cornerstone of early childhood development. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. This recommendation underscores the nutritional and immunological benefits that breast milk provides, promoting healthy growth and development while reducing the risk of infections and chronic diseases.
Dr. Aditya Dehury, a pediatrician specializing in neonatal care, emphasizes, "Breast milk is uniquely tailored to meet the nutritional needs of infants. It contains antibodies that help protect babies from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhea and pneumonia, making it crucial for reducing infant mortality rates globally."
Dr. Sanjusmita Tripathy, a senior Gynecologist in Bhuabneswar says, "Breastfeeding is not only beneficial for babies but also for mothers. It promotes bonding and helps reduce the risk of postpartum depression. Additionally, breastfeeding has long-term health benefits for mothers, including a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers."
“Despite its benefits, breastfeeding can present challenges for some mothers. Issues such as latch difficulties, low milk supply, and societal barriers can deter breastfeeding success. Support from healthcare providers, lactation consultants, and communities plays a pivotal role in overcoming these challenges. Initiatives promoting breastfeeding-friendly workplaces and public spaces also contribute to creating an enabling environment for breastfeeding mothers”, she adds.
As World Breastfeeding Week unfolds, it serves as a reminder to empower mothers with the knowledge and support they need to breastfeed successfully. Each breastfeeding journey is unique, and every effort to support breastfeeding contributes to the health and wellbeing of future generations.
In the words of Dr. Dehury, "Breastfeeding is a gift that mothers give to their children. It not only provides nourishment but also lays the foundation for a healthy life."
Dr. Kar echoes this sentiment, stating, "Supporting breastfeeding is investing in the future. It is a natural and cost-effective way to improve the health outcomes of infants and mothers worldwide.
