Kolkata, Aug 2: The West Bengal Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution urging the Central government to review the recently implemented 'Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita', which has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Initiated by the state's Law Minister, Moloy Ghatak, and other Trinamool Congress members, the resolution was discussed over two days before being approved by voice vote. The resolution emphasized the need for the Centre to reconsider the new laws, seeking consensus from jurists, social activists, and citizens to ensure good governance and the protection of fundamental rights and natural justice.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed the ruling party's claims that the new laws were "draconian and anti-people." Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, pointed out that extensive consultations had taken place before the Bill's passage in Parliament, including input from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. "If she had any reservations, she should have raised them earlier," Adhikari said, adding that the current resolution seemed redundant.
This development highlights the ongoing debate around the new legal framework, as West Bengal seeks a broader dialogue on its implications for governance and justice.
