Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: Odisha's Nandankanan Zoological Park has recently added a male and female giraffe to its collection, marking a significant expansion in its giraffe population. The two giraffes were transferred from the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata as part of an animal exchange program. The male giraffe is 1 year and 5 months old, while the female is 1 year and 1 month old.
With the arrival of these new additions, Nandankanan's giraffe population has now increased to three.
Transporting the giraffes proved challenging due to the difficulty of road travel. To ensure a smooth relocation, the zoo authorities took several precautions. A dedicated team from Nandankanan conducted a thorough survey of the route, identifying potential hazards. They then developed a comprehensive transportation plan and arranged quarantine facilities for the giraffes in collaboration with local officials, including Collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) along the route.
The journey began on the night of August 31 and after 25 hours on the road, the giraffes arrived safely at Nandankanan Zoological Park.
