New Delhi: Three Indian nationals working at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes were taken hostage during a coordinated attack by armed assailants at the factory premises on July 1, 2025, prompting strong condemnation from the Indian government and urgent calls for their safe release.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the abduction and described it as a "deplorable act of violence." The al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) extremist group claimed responsibility for the coordinated attack on several Malian army positions in the country's west and central regions.

Multi-Regional Terror Strike

The attack was part of a broader coordinated terror campaign across Mali. The attacks on Tuesday targeted Diboli in western Mali near Senegal's border, and the nearby towns of Kayes and Sandere. The Diamond Cement Factory, where the three Indian workers were employed, became a target during this wave of violence that swept across multiple regions of the West African nation.

India's Strong Response

The Indian government has taken swift diplomatic action in response to the crisis. The Embassy of India in Bamako is in close and constant communication with the relevant authorities of the Government of Mali, local law enforcement agencies, as well as the management of Diamond Cement Factory.

In an official statement, the MEA emphasized India's firm stance against violence targeting its citizens abroad. The government called upon Mali authorities to take all necessary measures to secure the safe and expeditious release of the abducted Indian nationals.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs are closely monitoring the evolving situation and remain engaged at various levels to facilitate the safe and early release of the Indian nationals. Security Advisory for Indian Citizens

Given the deteriorating security situation, the MEA has issued a strong advisory urging all Indians living in Mali to exercise extreme caution and stay vigilant. The ministry has advised Indian citizens in the region to maintain regular contact with the embassy for updates and assistance.

Regional Security Concerns

Mali has been grappling with insurgency and terrorist activities, particularly from groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and ISIS. The JNIM group, which claimed responsibility for this attack, has been active in the Sahel region and has previously targeted both military and civilian installations.

The Indian government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safe return of the abducted nationals at the earliest and promised to extend all possible support to the affected families. As the situation continues to unfold, diplomatic channels remain active in coordinating rescue efforts with Malian authorities and international partners.
