Focusing on white-ball cricket and fitness
Transitioning his focus entirely to shorter formats, Shami confirmed his continued participation in the Indian Premier League and domestic white-ball tournaments. He remains open to playing domestic red-ball fixtures purely to maintain optimal fitness levels. His final international Test appearance took place during the 2021-23 World Test Championship final against Australia, where he secured four wickets despite India facing a 209-run defeat. Throughout his tenure, he secured 12 four-wicket hauls and six five-wicket hauls, cementing his position as one of India's most lethal seamers. Pace bowlers often reduce their workload in their mid-thirties to extend their overall playing span, shifting toward franchise leagues and limited-overs internationals.
Expressing gratitude to supporters and coaches
Reflecting on his path from a small village to international stardom, the 34-year-old credited his success to his family, friends, and the Almighty. Holding his cherished Test cap number 279, he highlighted the physical struggles, injuries, and subsequent comebacks that defined his time in the white jersey. He also extended deep gratitude to his trainers, physiotherapists, and fans who provided constant encouragement.Concluding his statement, Shami acknowledged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal for recognizing his talent and offering crucial opportunities. Bidding farewell with a heavy heart, he emphasized that the pride of representing his nation will remain a cherished memory long after bowling his final Test delivery.
