Dhanteras marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. Observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik, the festival falls on November 6 this year.

Dhanteras is associated with wealth, good health and prosperity. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan carrying a pot of Amrit (nectar) on this day. This is why worshipping Lord Dhanvantari holds special significance during the festival.
