Bhubaneswar, July 28: A 25-year-old man allegedly murdered his father at their residence in Bhubaneswar's Chakeisiani area on Tuesday, weeks after returning home from a de-addiction centre. Police said the accused showed no signs of remorse and waited calmly for officers after the crime.

The deceased, identified as S. Durjyodhan (55), was a labour contractor. His son, S. Debraj, a college dropout, has been arrested on charges of murder. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Mancheswar police station.

According to police, the father and son were alone at home when an argument broke out early in the morning. Investigators said Debraj demanded liquor or brown sugar, but his father refused. Police said the accused became enraged after Durjyodhan allegedly offered him a beedi mixed with medication prescribed during his rehabilitation.

"In a fit of rage, he attacked his father with a plastic pipe before smashing his head with a stone, killing him on the spot," said ACP (Zone-V) Biswa Ranjan Senapati.

The incident came to light when labourers arrived at Durjyodhan's house to collect work orders. They found the gate open and discovered him lying in a pool of blood inside the house. Debraj was reportedly sitting outside the room with bloodstains on his clothes.

According to police, Debraj admitted to the murder and asked the workers to inform the police. "When we reached the spot, the accused was seated on a chair and calmly narrated the sequence of events without showing any remorse," ACP Senapati said.

Police said neighbours had frequently observed Debraj displaying aggressive and abnormal behaviour after returning from a de-addiction centre a few weeks ago. Sources said he had undergone treatment at the facility for nearly five months before being discharged.

Senior psychiatrist Dr Amrit Pattojoshi said withdrawal from addictive substances such as brown sugar and alcohol can lead to severe irritability, aggression and violent behaviour if not properly managed.

"Patients undergoing withdrawal require continuous medical supervision, counselling and family support. Without adequate follow-up care, they may react violently when denied access to addictive substances," he said, stressing the importance of post-rehabilitation monitoring and community support.

Following the incident, several labour contractors gathered outside the house and expressed grief, saying Durjyodhan had outstanding payments to make to them amounting to thousands of rupees.
