Tripura, May 14: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide call to conserve fuel amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Tripura government has issued a memorandum announcing new austerity measures aimed at reducing government expenditure and petroleum usage.
Released by the General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department on May 13, 2026, the order directs all Heads of Department (HoDs) to ensure that only 50% of Group C and Group D employees attend offices daily, while the remaining staff work from home. Departments are required to prepare weekly duty rosters, giving preference in the first week to employees residing closer to their workplaces.
Employees working remotely must remain available via phone and electronic communication and report to the office if urgent work arises. Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), local bodies, autonomous and statutory organisations, and subordinate offices have also been advised to implement similar measures. Essential and emergency services are exempt from these instructions. The order is effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had urged citizens to cut down on petrol and diesel consumption by using public transport, electric buses, carpooling, and working from home. He also encouraged reducing gold purchases and prioritising locally made products to lower India’s import burden, stating:
"Those who have a car should take more people along. Digital technology now makes many things easier, and virtual meetings and work-from-home arrangements should be prioritised. A huge amount of money goes abroad for gold imports, so postponing gold purchases is essential. The need of the hour is to turn 'Vocal for Local' into a people's movement."
The Tripura government’s measures are part of a broader national effort to promote energy conservation and fiscal prudence during challenging global conditions.
