New Delhi, May 18: A recent study conducted by scientists at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has uncovered a significant correlation between a specific nail abnormality and the risk of developing cancerous tumors of the skin, eyes, and kidneys.
The research, published in the JAMA Dermatology journal, highlights the discovery of a benign nail abnormality called onychopapilloma. Alongside a colored band, typically white or red, this anomaly is characterized by thickening of the nail beneath the discoloration and at the nail's end.
According to the study findings, the presence of this nail abnormality may signal the presence of a rare inherited disorder known as BAP1 tumor predisposition syndrome. This syndrome heightens the susceptibility to cancerous tumors and is driven by mutations in the BAP1 gene, which normally acts as a tumor suppressor.
Edward Cowen, head of Dermatology Consultation Services at NIH’s National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), emphasized that while the condition usually affects only one nail, their study of 47 individuals with BAP1 syndrome revealed that about 88 percent presented onychopapilloma tumors in multiple nails.
Cowen further suggested that nail screening could prove particularly beneficial for individuals with a personal or family history of melanoma or other potential BAP1-associated malignancies. This finding underscores the importance of early detection and proactive measures in managing cancer risk.
