Phulbani, August 22: The Kandhamal district administration has made elaborated security arrangements to ensure peace and harmony ahead of Janmashtami celebrations on August 26.
The district administration has conducted peace committee meetings across various blocks, involving members from different communities and religious groups.
Peace committee meetings are being held at each police station bringing together religious leaders, local authorities and political representatives to maintain communal harmony and avoid any untoward situation ahead of the Janmashtami celebrations on August 26, said SP Suvendu Patra. Besides, we have kept vigil on trouble mongers and stringent action will be taken against those spreading false rumors about potential riots, he added.
Security forces will be stationed in vulnerable areas throughout the festival to prevent any untoward situation, he said.
Notably, communal violence had flared up in the district after the murder of Hindu monk Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati on August 23, 2008 leading to over 42 deaths and widespread destruction. The district administration had to impose a 40-day curfew to restore law and order situation.
