Mumbai: In a dramatic turn of events, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended indefinitely due to heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision, confirmed by BCCI sources to Hindustan Times on Friday, comes in the wake of security concerns following air raid alerts near the Pathankot region, just 100 kilometers from Dharamsala — the venue for the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals clash.
The match, which had already been delayed due to rain, was abruptly halted midway after floodlights failed in the stadium. What initially appeared to be a technical glitch soon spiraled into a full-blown evacuation when security officials alerted players and match authorities about the regional threat level. The air raid alerts and regional military advisories were the final straw for tournament organizers.
“We have decided to indefinitely suspend the IPL. The players’ safety is our utmost priority. Hence, we decided to stop the tournament for now,” said a senior BCCI official. “We’ll evaluate the possibility of resumption later. Right now, national interest is of utmost importance.”
Players were quickly moved out of the field, and panic gripped both teams, especially among foreign players who were reportedly anxious after learning about the nearby military activity.
One player, speaking anonymously to The Indian Express, shared, “There was definite panic in the dressing rooms. The alerts felt too close. Everyone was concerned, especially the overseas guys.”
The Australian media had earlier reported that their players had raised serious safety concerns and were “ready” to leave the country if needed. As the tension mounted, the stadium, which was nearly 80% full, was systematically evacuated. Videos from the scene captured fans chanting anti-Pakistan slogans as they exited under the supervision of police and stadium security.
The impact was immediate beyond just the match. Flights in and out of Dharamsala were suspended, and team buses were redirected through alternative routes for a secure exit. According to local sources, high-security protocols were enacted across nearby cities, and teams were advised to remain indoors or relocate under escort.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI that discussions were ongoing with central authorities:
“The situation is evolving quickly. We are waiting for updated security advisories. The safety of players, staff, and fans is non-negotiable. ”Until Thursday night, the BCCI had been assessing whether matches could proceed without public attendance, but Friday's emergency alerts sealed the decision.
The indefinite suspension raises questions about the rest of the IPL season and whether there’s a window to restart later in the year. While the tournament was nearing its final leg, stakeholders acknowledged that no cricket match outweighs national security concerns.
As the India-Pakistan tensions continue to unfold, the IPL joins a growing list of events affected by cross-border volatility. The situation remains fluid, and the BCCI is expected to issue further updates pending directives from security and home affairs ministries.
