Bhuban, Jan 6: Renowned Jatra actor and popular villain Gyanaranjan Sahu passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment at Bhuban Medical. He had been suffering from liver jaundice for a long period and was also battling liver cirrhosis. His demise has cast a pall of gloom over the Jatra and theatre fraternity across Odisha.
According to sources, Sahu had been unwell for several months and had returned home after his health deteriorated. On Monday, his family members admitted him to Bhuban Medical for treatment, where he breathed his last during treatment. His mortal remains are currently kept at the hospital.
Gyanaranjan Sahu began his long and illustrious career in the Jatra world with Tulasi Gananatya and, over the years, emerged as one of the most recognised villainous faces on the Jatra stage. He was last associated with Kalinga Gananatya on a contractual basis. With decades of experience in the traditional theatre circuit, Sahu was known for his commanding stage presence, powerful dialogue delivery, and intense negative roles that captivated audiences night after night.
During his career, he acted in more than 100 Jatra productions, including popular plays such as Baa Baa Re Capital, Kharap Jhiara Gapa, Asati Tulasi Sati Chaura, Michhua Radhua Gapa Sarila, and Haata Baseichi Hata Nagari. Each of his performances left a lasting impact, earning him immense popularity among Jatra lovers and respect within the theatre community.
Following his demise, tributes poured in from fellow artists, theatre organisers, and fans. His contribution to the Jatra world, especially in elevating the role of the stage villain, will be remembered for years to come, leaving behind a rich legacy in Odisha’s traditional performing arts.
