Puri, Feb 24: Minor girl, Damayanti, who donated her organ to save another life before her demise, was accorded full state honour before her cremation.
The last rites of Damayanti, the 14-year-old brain-dead girl who emerged as a saviour, were performed at Swargadwara in Puri on Saturday with the National flag on her body, as a proud organ donor.
Damayanti, a class IX student from Keonjhar district, was suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). She was undergoing dialysis for the last few months. Meanwhile, she suffered a brain stroke and was admitted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on February 15. She gradually went into a coma state and was put on a life-support ventilator.
Later, the expert committee from the AIIMS declared her brain dead. With no ray of hope to see their daughter alive, the parents, Banita and Dukhabandhu Mahanta, expressed their interest to donate their ward's organs. Acting on it, the hospital made necessary arrangements to receive helathy organs from Damayanti's body and send them to the organ-bank in New Delhi.
A team of eminent surgeons of the AIIMS on Friday successfully retrieved Damayanti's liver and sent it to a hospital in New Delhi through a green corridor facilitated by the Commissionerate Police, airport, and airlines authorities.
