Goan pop legend bids farewell during emotional UK concert

Legendary pop musician Remo Fernandes delivered his final live concert on Monday, August 3, at a Goa Day event in the United Kingdom. Fans chanted his name loudly as he walked slowly onto the stage. He addressed the emotional crowd about recent health issues before completing his entire set while seated.

Before singing, he explained how a Covid-19 infection caused a mild stroke, making it hard to play his guitar and flute. He also mentioned a vertigo diagnosis last year and a recent surgery following an accidental fall. Historically, Indian pop artists rarely discussed personal vulnerabilities on stage, making his candid admission especially touching for long-time listeners.

Independent Music Pioneer

Born on May 8, 1953, in Goa, his passion started early. He performed at age five and wrote his first original love song at 14. He later studied architecture at Sir J J College of Architecture in Mumbai. After busking through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, he blended Konkani folk with Portuguese mando and pop-rock. He famously recorded independent cassettes like Goan Crazy and Old Goan Gold at his home studio and distributed them to local shops himself.

Rise to National Fame

Mainstream success arrived in 1987 when he composed the title track for the Hindi movie Jalwa. Audiences across India soon recognized his unique voice and satirical lyrics. He followed up with chart-topping tracks like Hamma Hamma from Bombay, Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, and Huiya Ho from Khamoshi. He earned the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2007 for his outstanding musical contributions. Currently living in Porto, Portugal, his farewell show proved his melodies still resonate deeply with fans.
