Bhubaneswar, September 21: Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg reviewed the state’s preparedness for heavy rainfall expected over the next 2–3 days due to a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, particularly in southern districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the well-marked low-pressure area is likely to intensify into a depression within 24 hours and a deep depression thereafter, moving towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast by September 23.
Rainfall is expected from September 22, with around 11 southern districts likely to be affected. Winds of 45–55 kmph are expected along the coast.
Following the meeting, Garg said there was currently no possibility of a cyclone, but warned of heavy rainfall in southern Odisha. She directed district collectors and concerned departments to remain alert, monitor the situation continuously and take preventive measures.
Officials were asked to closely monitor dams, embankments, drainage systems and river basins. Leave of key officials in vulnerable districts has also been cancelled, while pregnant women nearing delivery have been advised to shift to hospitals in advance.
The Water Resources Department was directed to manage reservoir levels, particularly at Indravati, which is currently about 84 per cent full. ODRAF and NDRF teams are being deployed, while the Special Relief Commissioner’s control room will operate round the clock.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until September 24, while those already at sea have been asked to return to safety.
The Chief Secretary directed all departments and district administrations to maintain close coordination and ensure timely preparedness in vulnerable areas.
