Bhubaneswar, March 13: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the only railway zone in the history of Indian Railways to handle 500 million tonnes (MT) of freight in a single year. This remarkable performance reflects the zone’s strong operational efficiency and its significant contribution to the nation’s freight transportation, said an official release.

According to an ECoR statement, during the year, the East Coast Railway handled 262.9 MT of loading, registering a 10.4% growth, while unloading reached 237.6 MT, showing a 9% increase compared to the previous period. The balanced growth in both loading and unloading demonstrates the strong logistics network and efficient freight management across the zone.

The ECoR said that the remarkable performance reflects the dedicated efforts of railway officials and staff, improved operational efficiency, enhanced coordination with industries, and optimized freight management strategies. Bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, steel, cement, and other essential goods have contributed significantly to this record loading.

“This outstanding performance reflects East Coast Railway’s pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s freight economy and supporting industrial growth in its hinterland. Continuous monitoring, innovative operational practices, and the dedicated efforts of railway employees have played a key role in achieving this milestone,” it said.

ECoR continues to play a key role in supporting industries, ports and businesses by ensuring smooth and reliable transportation of essential commodities. The zone remains committed to further strengthening freight services and contributing to the economic growth of the region.

This milestone stands as a remarkable achievement for East Coast Railway and a proud moment in the history of Indian Railways, it added.
