IMI-OBB Plantation Drive

Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: Climate change, deforestation, ozone layer depletion and shortage of natural resources have posed serious threats to existence of life in future. Modernisation, urbanisation and industrialisation have fuelled the problems to threatening levels.

Experts across the world have been repeatedly pleading to 'Save Mother Earth', maintain eco-balance and take up plantation drives seriously.

The response to their pleadings have been very negligible so far. But there are some concerned souls, who are determined to do whatever they can, to improve the eco-balance and increase the green cover on Earth crust.

One of such admirable joint initiative was made by the Branding Committee of International Management Institute (IMI), Bhubaneswar and the Odisha Biodiversity Board (OBB), Government of Odisha recently. Their joint plantation drive was titled 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', urging people to plant saplings and look after them in memory of their mother(s).

Appreciating the drive, Prof PC Biswal, Director of IMI Bhubaneswar, emphasized the event's alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. He said, "This initiative aims to make our ecosystem sustainable for future generations."

The plantation drive was monitored by Dr Nihar Ranjan Nayak, Member Secretary of OBB. Dr Nayak said, "Odisha is filled with bio-resources, but people are not aware of our rich biodiversity. This event aims to encourage people of Odisha, especially the youngsters to plant and save trees."

Echoing Dr Nayak's words,  Sisir Kumar Mishra, DFO of OBB was all praise for the IMI members, who have volunteered to increase green cover and plant trees. But he added that more such efforts are a must,  if we are serious about preserving our biodiversity and save Mother Earth for a better tomorrow.

The event marked planting of more than 150 saplings by students, officials and staff members of IMI and OBB. Participants celebrated 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' and planned for the succession of plant ownership to their youngsters.

The participants also urged people of Odisha to plant and save saplings in their surroundings. They agreed government alone can't increase green cover and save biodiversity. The citizens have to come forward and join hands to save Mother Earth for a better tomorrow.
