Bhubaneswar, June 29: As many 32 minor girls engaged as domestic in Bhubaneswar were rescued during the last 18 months, according to reports.
Similarly, 31 cases were registered in Khordha district on charges of child labour and torture last year and no cases have been registered so far this year.
City police on June 13 rescued an 11-year-old girl from her employer’s house at Gajapati Nagar in a serious condition and was admitted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
Police also arrested Lipika Ranjita Sahoo for employing the minor as domestic help and brutally assaulting the child repeatedly in the past 10 months.
Benudhar Senapati, director of Childline NGO said as per Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, employing children under the age of 14-years is a crime.
Slum dwellers are sending their school going girls to work as domestic help in the houses of rich people due to poverty, he added.
