Dhaka, Aug 08: General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the head of the Bangladeshi army, has declared the military's unwavering support for Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is expected to be sworn in as the interim prime minister later today, according to a report by The Daily Star.
Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the army, navy, and air force would collaborate to back Yunus in his new role. He shared that he had already spoken with Yunus, expressing confidence in the professor's ability to lead the nation through this critical transition.
"I had a very positive conversation with him. It was clear to me that he is deeply committed to this responsibility. I am confident he will successfully guide us toward a democratic process, and we will all benefit from it," the general was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman also expressed optimism that Yunus would receive broad support from students and political parties alike. The country has been gripped by unrest since the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement launched a multi-day "non-cooperation action" with authorities on Sunday, leading to widespread protests.
These demonstrations quickly escalated into violent clashes between students, police, and government supporters. In the wake of the turmoil, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country, paving the way for Yunus to lead an interim government.
Yunus, renowned as an economist and banker who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his pioneering work in microfinance, is scheduled to return to Bangladesh later today after attending the Olympics in France and receiving medical treatment.
