Lamptaput, Jul 3: After six days of incessant rainfall in Lamtaput Block of Koraput, authorities have opened two sluice gates of the Machkund Project's D.Dam as a precautionary measure.
With concerns over rising water levels, the discharge began through the 6th and 7th gates of the dam.
The dam, which has a capacity of 2,590 feet, has reached a water level of 2,588 feet, prompting the authorities to take action. As a result, floodwaters are being released through these gates, with approximately 1,000 cusecs of water being discharged into the downstream Chitrakonda Reservoir.
Project officials have stated that if the heavy rainfall persists, there may be a need to open additional gates. Residents living downstream are being closely monitored, and the authorities have issued precautionary warnings to ensure their safety.
The situation is being carefully monitored, as further rainfall could require additional water releases from the dam, potentially increasing flood risks in surrounding areas.
