Kanpur, Aug 17: At least 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express passenger train derailed in Uttar Pradesh early Saturday morning, according to a Railway Board official. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near Kanpur railway station as the train was en route to Jhansi.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported, but the rail route has been disrupted. The official noted that the derailment happened after the train struck a boulder, damaging the engine’s cattle guard. The North Central Railway confirmed that no passengers were injured. Fire trucks and ambulances responded promptly, and a thorough inspection of the train confirmed everyone was safe.
The Railways are arranging buses to transport passengers to another station, from where they will be transferred by a special train. Seven trains have been cancelled, and three have been diverted due to the derailment. Shashi Kant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer of the North Central Railway Zone, stated that buses were sent to move passengers to Kanpur Railway Station and that an eight-coach MEMU train was dispatched to assist with the evacuation.
The Railways have issued the following helpline numbers: Prayagraj (0532-2408128, 0532-2407353), Kanpur (0512-2323018, 0512-2323015), Mirzapur (054422200097), Etawah (7525001249), Tundla (7392959702), Ahmedabad (07922113977), Banaras City (8303994411), Gorakhpur (0551-2208088), and Jhansi Rail Division (0510-2440787, 0510-2440790, Orai-05162-252206, Banda-05192-227543, Lalitpur Jn-07897992404).
