Puri, July 13: A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed at a poultry farm in Bada Ankula village in the Delanga block of Odisha’s Puri district, prompting the state government to initiate emergency containment measures. The H5N1 avian influenza virus was detected in samples collected from the area, a senior official said on Sunday.

The outbreak was confirmed by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, on July 11, following laboratory analysis of samples collected after villagers reported an unusual number of poultry deaths. The Odisha government responded swiftly to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread to other regions.

Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik visited the affected village on Sunday to assess the situation firsthand and review the containment measures in place. During his visit, he directed local officials and district administration to implement all necessary steps to prevent further spread of the virus and ensure public safety.

Minister Mallik informed the media that the Fisheries and Animal Resources Department has deployed seven Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), all of which have received specialized training. These teams, supported by expert veterinarians, began culling operations on July 12.

Over two days — Saturday and Sunday — 6,756 poultry birds were culled within a one-kilometer radius of the outbreak zone, following standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the central government. The culled birds were disposed of scientifically by burying them in deep pits treated with lime, adhering to biosecurity protocols to avoid environmental contamination.

The minister added that disinfection and sanitation efforts are ongoing in the affected area. Vehicle movement to and from poultry farms within a 10-kilometer radius has been strictly controlled. Biosecurity measures have been tightened, and routine inspections are being carried out to ensure compliance.

In addition to the containment measures, Minister Mallik assured that the government will provide compensation to affected poultry farmers within two days to mitigate the economic impact of the outbreak. “We are taking swift action, keeping in mind public health and the livelihoods of poultry farmers. Controlling this outbreak is our top priority,” he said.
