Kolkata, August 9:Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday alleged that anti-social elements hurled large stones at her car in North 24 Parganas, claiming the incident could have resulted in serious injuries or even death.

Banerjee was travelling to the residence of a deceased TMC worker in North 24 Parganas when the alleged attack took place. Speaking to reporters afterwards, she said the incident occurred in the presence of police personnel and accused the police of failing to prevent the attack.

“Large stones were hurled at my car by anti-social elements, right in front of the police. The attack was so severe that if the windows had been open, my head could have been split open. We could have all been killed,” Banerjee said.

Questioning the circumstances surrounding the incident, the former chief minister said she had never witnessed anything similar before. She also alleged that the police were protecting the BJP.

“This happened right in front of the police. I have never seen anything like this. What is going on?” Banerjee said.

Banerjee was accompanied by Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen during the visit. Slogans of “Chor bhagao” were also heard from the crowd at the spot.

Reacting to the allegations, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya condemned the attack on Banerjee and denied any involvement of the BJP. He said the police should take necessary action against those responsible.

“It is between the public and TMC,” Bhattacharya said, adding that the police should take appropriate action in the matter.
