New York, Aug 30: He was tipped to be a title contender this time. But Carlos Alcaraz's 15-match Grand Slam unbeaten streak was over with a sloppy 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 loss to 74th-ranked Botic Van De Zandschulp in the US Open, here.
Alcaraz having won the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July this year, was expected to win the fourth Grand Slam of his career by clinching the US Open title this year.
He was also the Silver medallist at the Paris Olympics recently after losing to Novak Djokovic in the final. But on Thursday night, he was shocked by Botic Van De Zandschulp and had to bow out of the tournament unceremoniously.
But Alcaraz's ouster was not the only upset in the US Open on Thursday night, in the women's singles, Naomi Osaka lost to Karolina Muchova in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, here. Muchova was a semi-finalist at the US Open a year ago.
