UAE leaders honor Indian pilot for extreme cockpit bravery
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary courage under extreme duress. This prestigious recognition highlights his exceptional efforts to protect passengers during a dangerous mid-air emergency on September 30. Despite sustaining serious injuries during the confrontation, Machchhar successfully managed to unlock the secure flight deck door. His quick thinking enabled both crew members and brave passengers to neutralise the immediate threat, effectively preventing a major aviation disaster. Strict global aviation protocols govern flight deck access to ensure passenger safety against internal threats, making this coordinated intervention particularly remarkable.
Global leaders praise courageous actions
International leaders quickly commended his quick thinking under extreme pressure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Machchhar as a true hero, while US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu similarly praised his decisive actions despite severe physical trauma. Israel plans to present an additional civilian bravery award to the pilot once he fully recovers from his medical treatment.

Furthermore, the national civil aviation authority extended its formal commendation to everyone on board who helped secure the aircraft. Such decisive collaboration ensured the safety of everyone travelling that day.
