New Delhi, July 18: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday administered the oath of office to Justices Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan as Supreme Court judges, restoring the top court's full capacity of 34 judges, which includes Chief Justice himself.
The appointments of Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court R Mahadevan, were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. Emphasizing diversity on the bench, the Collegium highlighted their nominations. President's approval was granted on July 16 for their elevation.
Justice Singh, hailing from Manipur, marks a significant milestone as the first Supreme Court judge from his state. His appointment is seen as a step towards representing the North-East region more prominently in the judiciary. Justice Singh will hold office until February 28, 2028, adhering to the Supreme Court's retirement age of 65.
