Washington DC, May 10: Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump announced that both nations had agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire."
Trump credited US mediation as pivotal in securing the agreement, commending the leadership of both countries for their "common sense and great intelligence" in bringing an end to the crisis.
Trump shared the news on the social media platform Truth Social, stating, "After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, confirmed Trump's statement, saying, "Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising its sovereignty and territorial integrity."
The announcement came a day after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt discussed the US's efforts to mediate between the two nations. Leavitt explained that the United States was working to de-escalate the ongoing tensions. She noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been actively engaged in discussions with the leaders of both countries to facilitate peace.
Leavitt added, "This is something that the Secretary of State, and now, our National Security Adviser Marco Rubio, have been deeply involved in. The President is committed to seeing this de-escalate as quickly as possible."
She further acknowledged the long-standing nature of the conflict between India and Pakistan, stating, "These are two countries that have been at odds for decades, long before President Trump took office. However, he maintains strong relationships with the leaders of both countries, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been in constant communication with them, working to bring this conflict to an end."
