Baripada, Oct 21: Two women died and at least six others of a family were critically injured on Saturday after a truck rammed into their car, they were onboard.
The mishap took place on NH-49 near the Bangiriposi gorge in Mayurbhanj district in the afternoon.
Sources said, eight members of a family from Kharagpur in West Bengal were travelling to Dwarashunighat for the puja in their new Innova car. Meanwhile, an iron-laden truck tossed violently from its back. As a result, two women who were sitting in the rear seat, died on the spot while six others were critically injured. The car was also fully mangled.
On being informed, local people and police along with the fire brigade rushed to the spot and rescued the injured after cutting the mangled car with gas cutters.
The injured were rushed to the Bangiriposi community health centre. Their condition was stated to be critical at the time.
Police have detained the truck driver,recovered the bodies for post-mortem and other legal compliances.
