Dubai, Dec 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that he proposes to host the 33rd Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 33) in India in the year 2028.
Gracing the opening ceremony of high-level segment at COP 28 in UAE, PM Modi expressed his desire to host the summit in India.
"India is committed to work towards UN Framework for Climate Change process. That is why, through this platform, I propose to host COP33 Summit in India in 2028," he said.
In his opening remarks he also mentioned that India has achieved its emission intensity targets 11 years ahead of committed time frame.
"India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030. We have decided to increase the share of non-fossil fuels to 50 per cent," PM Modi added.
"Today, India has presented an excellent example of the balance between ecology and economy before the world. Despite India being home to 17 per cent of population of the world, its contribution to Global Carbon Emissions is less than 4 per cent. India is one of those few economies of the world that is on the path to meet Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets."
The Prime Minister also proposed Green Credit Initiative which focuses on creating carbon sinks through people's participation.
"From this forum today, I want to invoke another pro-planet, pro-active and positive initiative - Green Credit Initiative," he said.
PM Modi addressed the world leaders at the summit and said that they have continuously supported the issues of climate justice, climate finance and green credit raised by him.
"With our collective efforts, the belief has increased that for the welfare of the world, it is necessary to protect everyone's interests," he added.
He also emphasized on the need to give all developing countries a fair share in the global carbon budget.
