Chilika, Aug 30: Odisha is poised for a significant boost in its aviation infrastructure, with seaplane services expected to take off by October 2025. Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu announced the development during a regional review meeting held in Bhubaneswar.
As part of the plan, water aerodromes will be established at Chilika Lake, aiming to improve connectivity to coastal regions and key tourist destinations. Similar initiatives are also being introduced in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, all aimed at enhancing regional air mobility across the country.
The minister also highlighted that 22 non-functional airstrips across Odisha will be revived and made operational in the near future. Additionally, several of the state’s 20 existing airstrips may be upgraded into full-fledged airports to accommodate increased air traffic.
In response to rising passenger demand, Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) will soon see the addition of a third terminal (T-3). The new terminal is expected to combine modern amenities with elements reflecting Odisha’s rich cultural heritage. A proposal for constructing a new terminal at the airport's old site is also under active consideration.
Regarding the long-awaited Puri airport project, Minister Naidu confirmed that the Centre has given in-principle approval. The project now awaits further action from the Odisha government to move forward.
These developments mark a major step forward in strengthening Odisha’s air connectivity and positioning the state as a key player in India’s regional aviation network.
