Navratri Day 7: Maa Kalaratri worship, significance, legend of Raktabeej

The seventh day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Kalaratri, the fierce and powerful seventh form of Maa Durga. Worshipped as the destroyer of darkness, fear and negative energies, the Goddess symbolises courage, strength and spiritual transformation.

Despite her fearsome appearance, Maa Kalaratri is considered benevolent towards her devotees and is also known as Shubhankari, meaning the one who brings auspiciousness.

Who is Maa Kalaratri?

Maa Kalaratri is depicted with a dark complexion, three eyes and four hands. She is commonly shown holding a sword and a vajra, while her other two hands display the Abhaya and Varada mudras, symbolising protection and blessings. She rides a donkey, which is associated with humility and detachment.

Her form represents the power to destroy ignorance, overcome fear and eliminate negative tendencies.

The legend of Raktabeej

According to Hindu mythology, Raktabeej was a powerful demon who possessed a unique boon. Every drop of his blood that fell to the ground gave rise to another demon identical to him. As a result, defeating him became increasingly difficult, as every attack multiplied the number of demons.

To end the threat, Maa Durga manifested her fierce form, Maa Kalaratri. She drank Raktabeej's blood before it could touch the ground, preventing the creation of more demons and ultimately bringing about his defeat.

The legend is also interpreted as a symbolic lesson about human desires. Just as Raktabeej's blood multiplied demons, unchecked desires can give rise to greed, anger and restlessness. Maa Kalaratri's victory represents the need to overcome negative thoughts and habits before they grow stronger.

Significance of Maa Kalaratri Worship

On the seventh day of Navratri, devotees worship Maa Kalaratri to seek courage, protection and freedom from fear. Her fierce form reminds devotees to confront difficulties rather than run away from them.

Devotees traditionally offer prayers and bhog to the Goddess according to their family and regional customs. Jaggery and other offerings are associated with Maa Kalaratri worship in several traditions.

Maa Kalaratri Mantra

Devotees chant the following mantra while worshipping the Goddess:

“Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah.”

The mantra is recited with devotion to seek the Goddess's blessings, courage and spiritual strength.

Spiritual message of Navratri Day 7

Maa Kalaratri's story offers a powerful message for modern life. In a world filled with distractions, competition and endless desires, her worship encourages people to exercise control over their thoughts, break unhealthy habits and face their fears with determination.

As Navratri progresses towards its eighth day, dedicated to Maa Mahagauri, Maa Kalaratri's worship symbolises an important stage of the spiritual journey: confronting inner darkness and moving towards peace, purity and divine grace.

On this seventh day of Navratri, devotees pray to Maa Kalaratri for strength to overcome fear, eliminate negativity and move forward on the path of devotion.
