Odisha braces for winter chills with a sharp drop in night temperatures across most districts

Meteorological department predicts sharp temperature drops and thunderstorm activity

Odisha residents will experience noticeably cooler conditions very soon. Weather experts forecast a sharp reduction in minimum night temperatures by two to four degrees Celsius over the next four to five days. This cooling trend will spread across all districts, marking a definitive shift toward winter weather. No significant temperature fluctuations are expected immediately after this initial drop, ensuring a steady chill in the air for the foreseeable future.

Impending thunderstorms and Local Rain

Southern parts of the state must prepare for turbulent weather before the cold fully sets in. Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar issued an official yellow warning indicating isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Residents in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam should anticipate gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. These five districts are also likely to experience isolated rainfall, creating potentially hazardous local conditions for travelers. Regional climate patterns often produce these brief but intense storm systems right as the seasonal transition from post-monsoon to winter occurs, combining lingering moisture with dropping temperatures.

Recent Temperature and Downpour Records Current meteorological data reflects this transitional period perfectly. Nayagarh recently recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 33.0 degrees Celsius. Conversely, Paralakhemundi and Deogarh reported the lowest minimum temperature in the plains, dipping down to 17.8 degrees Celsius. Similiguda remains the coldest spot in the hilly regions, registering a chilly 17.5 degrees Celsius early in the morning. Rainfall has already impacted several areas significantly. Ganjam district saw substantial downpours, with Dharakote recording 46.0 millimeters, Aska registering 41.8 millimeters, and Sheragada receiving 39.0 millimeters of rain. Gosani in Gajapati district also received a notable 45.0 millimeters. Meanwhile, the state capital of Bhubaneswar noted a maximum temperature of 32.0 degrees and a minimum of 22.6 degrees Celsius. Neighbouring Cuttack followed closely with 30.4 degrees maximum and 21.2 degrees Celsius minimum. Weather officials strongly advise citizens in the warned southern districts to stay safe indoors during the predicted lightning strikes and heavy gusts.
