Berhampur, Aug 5: A team of five personnel of Berhampur police on Sunday left for Wayanad with a search and rescue dog named ‘Storm’.

The team boarded Vivek SF Express to join the search and rescue operation in Awyanad following a request from Kerala government to send the dog, said Berhampur DIG Dr Sarthak Sarangi. Storm is the only canine in the K-9 Squad which can be engaged in carrying out search and rescue operations.

The five member team led by sub-inspector (SI) Anuj Taudia includes assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted in K-9 Squad Dhiren Kumar Biswal, one havildar, Storm’s main handler Prahlad Nayak and his assistant Partha Sarathi Behera.

The six-year-old Storm, a German Shepherd, has the expertise to trace dead bodies and survivors from the debris, said Dr Sarangi.

Notably, search efforts are on in Wayanad’s landslides-hit areas on Day 7. Over 1,300 rescuers, heavy machinery and advanced equipment are said to have been deployed to find survivors and mortal remains of deceased.
