Sambalpur, Aug 24: In a shocking incident, a Class IX girl jumped into the Mahanadi River from the Chaurapur Bridge in Odisha's Sambalpur district this morning and went missing.
The girl has been identified as Arita Bisi, a student at Budharaja High School.
According to eyewitnesses, Arita arrived at the bridge on her bicycle, left her schoolbag and phone behind, and then jumped into the fast-flowing river.
School officials confirmed that Arita was an orphan who had been granted free admission and study materials through government programs. She had been staying with her relatives.
Upon getting the information, Fire Services personnel arrived at the spot and launched a search operation using a powerboat to trace the girl.
Meanwhile, police have seized her belongings, including the bicycle, bag, and mobile phone, and initiated an investigation into the matter to ascertain the circumstances that prompted the girl to take the extreme step.
