Hyderabad: India opener Abhishek Sharma created a new world record during the fourth T20 International against the West Indies, surpassing former India captain Suryakumar Yadav’s mark for the most sixes by a batter from a full-member nation in a calendar year in the shortest format.
Abhishek achieved the milestone on Wednesday when he struck his 69th six of 2026, going past Suryakumar’s previous record of 68 sixes, set in 2022.
The left-handed batter took time to find his rhythm during the Hyderabad encounter, with the West Indies bowlers keeping his scoring rate in check during the early stages of his innings. He eventually cleared the boundary for the first time in the ninth over, taking on pacer Shamar Springer.
Although Abhishek could not convert his start into a substantial innings, his six helped him claim the record and further strengthened his reputation as one of India's most aggressive T20 batters.

The achievement adds to an impressive run for the young opener, who has consistently made headlines with his attacking approach and ability to score quickly. His record-breaking performances have also placed him among the leading figures in India's T20I batting line-up.
Abhishek's latest feat comes just days after he surpassed Suryakumar in another T20I milestone, becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs in the format in terms of balls faced during the third T20I against the West Indies in Indore.
