Bhubaneswar, September 16: The CBI has registered an FIR in a multi-crore fake vehicle accident claim scam in Odisha.
The case involves a Cuttack motorcyclist, Brajakishore Sahoo, accused of causing a fatal accident in 2021, which is part of a larger investigation into 33 fake accident claims across 30 police stations since 2021. These claims were allegedly fabricated to obtain insurance money fraudulently.
The CBI investigation follows directions from the Orissa High Court, which noted the scale and complexity of the crime, leading to the transfer of the case from state police to the CBI for a more thorough investigation. The High Court's decision came after a petition by ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company.
Sahoo had previously been charged with dangerous driving and causing death by negligence, and an insurance claim had been filed in connection with the incident.
The investigation revealed that multiple false claims were being made using the same driver's name to defraud the insurance company of crores of rupees.
