As the sun's rays intensify and temperatures rise, the summer season presents unique challenges for maintaining healthy, radiant skin. From increased sun exposure to heightened humidity levels, the harsh elements of summer can take a toll on our skin's health and appearance. However, with the right skincare regimen and protective measures, you can effectively combat these challenges and keep your skin glowing all summer long.

Prameya English talked to dermatologists and beauty experts based in Bhubaneswar to uncover a range of expert-recommended skincare tips. These insights are aimed at helping you shield your skin from the adverse effects of summer, ensuring it remains hydrated, protected, and radiant despite the season's challenges.

Dr. Liza Mohapatra, Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology at IMS & Sum Hospital, Bhubaneswar, emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated for healthy skin during the summer. She recommends consuming four to five liters of water daily, along with alternatives like ORS, yogurt, buttermilk, lemon water, etc., to maintain hydration levels.

In addition to hydration, Dr. Mohapatra highlights the significance of physical protection against the sun's harmful rays. She advises covering up with lightweight, breathable fabrics like pure cotton or linen when going outdoors. Furthermore, she stresses the necessity of applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, irrespective of the weather conditions. For those with sensitive skin, Dr. Mohapatra suggests using physical sunscreen for added protection.

Ultimately, Dr. Mohapatra emphasizes the importance of seeking personalized skincare recommendations from a dermatologist, especially for individuals with specific skin concerns or conditions. Consulting a dermatologist ensures tailored advice on suitable products and treatments to maintain skin health during the summer months.

Stella, a trusted beauty advisor, emphasizes the importance of sunscreen as our skin's faithful companion during the summer heat. "Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher," she advises. "Apply it generously on all exposed areas to shield your skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays."

Hydration emerges as another essential pillar of summer skincare. Stella recommends lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers enriched with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. "Lock in moisture without feeling heavy on the skin," she suggests. "And remember to hydrate from within by drinking plenty of water and refreshing beverages like juices, coconut water, and lemon water."

Mona Pal, a seasoned beauty expert with over 15 years of experience, echoes Stella's sentiments. "Protect your skin from the sun, hydrate diligently, and embrace antioxidants for a radiant complexion," she emphasizes. "With the right care and attention, you can revel in the beauty of summer while ensuring your skin remains healthy and glowing."

For those seeking relief from sun-exposed skin, Mona suggests turning to cooling skincare products. "Look for moisturizers, serums, or face masks infused with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, cucumber, or menthol," she advises. "These ingredients work wonders in soothing sunburned or overheated skin, reducing inflammation, and restoring balance."

And let's not forget our lips and eyes, often overlooked in our skincare routines. "Protect your lips with an SPF-infused lip balm," Mona reminds us. "And shield your eyes from harmful UV rays with sunglasses boasting UV protection."

As the day transitions to night, Mona recommends switching to lighter skincare products to allow the skin to breathe and regenerate. "Cleanse away dirt and makeup with a gentle cleanser," she advises. "Follow up with a lightweight moisturizer or serum to hydrate and repair your skin overnight."
