"Trying our best", says AIIMS Bhubaneswar Director on health condition of Balasore self-immolation case victim

Bhubaneswar, July 13: AIIMS Bhubaneswar Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas on Sunday stated that the hospital is making every possible effort to save the life of the female student from Balasore who attempted self-immolation. The student, allegedly driven to the act by sexual harassment, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and is currently battling for her life.

Dr. Biswas confirmed that the young woman sustained severe burns covering nearly 90–95% of her body. She is currently on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “We received the patient in a critical state. She has suffered extensive burns and is on ventilator support in the ICU. Her condition remains extremely critical. We are doing everything we can. A multidisciplinary committee has been formed to oversee her care,” he told.

Earlier in the day, Odisha Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj assured that the state government will bear all medical expenses for the student, who is enrolled at Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College. She reportedly attempted self-immolation in protest against alleged sexual harassment by an assistant professor at the institution.

In this connection, Balasore Police on Saturday arrested the accused, Assistant Professor Samira Kumar Sahu of FM Auto College. He has since been produced in court.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has launched a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations of harassment, which led to this tragic incident. The state remains on high alert as the case has triggered widespread public concern and outrage.
