Bhubaneswar, July 13: BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi has accused FM Autonomous College in Balasore of ignoring a female B.Ed student’s harassment complaint, which allegedly led her to attempt self-immolation. Sarangi said the college delayed action despite promises of a swift inquiry. He criticized the enquiry report as biased and inconsistent with the victim's statement.
Opposition leaders slammed the BJP government over rising crimes against women in Odisha. Congress spokesperson Rajani Mohanty called the incident “heart-wrenching” and accused the state of failing to provide justice. BJD leader Lenin Mohanty highlighted other recent incidents of gender-based violence and said the student was “punished for no fault of hers.”
The Odisha Government has formed a committee to investigate the case. Assistant Professor Samira Kumar Sahu, accused of harassment, has been arrested. The college principal, Dillip Kumar Ghose, has been suspended. The student had earlier filed a complaint with the Internal Committee on June 30.
