Nana Patekar and his deep love for cooking
Legendary Indian cinema icon Nana Patekar passed away early this morning following a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 75. While the nation mourns the loss of a powerhouse performer known for his intense screen presence across Marathi and Hindi cinema, many close associates remember his incredible warmth off the camera. He leaves behind a profound legacy defined not only by his decades of dramatic brilliance but also by his remarkable culinary talents and tireless dedication to social causes.
For years, the star openly stated his deep love for preparing meals. He famously said during interviews that he considered himself confident in the kitchen than in front of the camera. Cooking offered him immense personal joy, primarily because he loved serving food to others. During busy film shoots, he would routinely take over meal preparations for large crews. He possessed the rare ability to comfortably cook for up to 200 people simultaneously. Instead of working entirely alone, he preferred involving his co-stars in the daily process, often assigning them simple tasks like chopping fresh vegetables or peeling basic ingredients.
Industry colleagues frequently praised his signature non-vegetarian preparations. He mastered complex traditional recipes, earning widespread acclaim for his rich mutton paya, keema kaleji, and bheja. To ensure perfect authentic flavors, he meticulously prepared all his spice blends from scratch at his residence. Fellow actors fondly recalled the deep affection with which he served his homemade meals. Rajpal Yadav once highlighted that making food is one thing, but serving it with genuine love is an entirely different art form.
Away from the glittering movie sets, he lived a remarkably grounded life. He spent considerable time at his sprawling 10-acre farmhouse situated near Sinhagad Fort in Pune. There, he fully immersed himself in traditional agriculture, personally ploughing the fields, growing his own fresh vegetables, and quietly tending to his buffaloes.
