Maharashtra Council Passes BNSS Amendments Extending Preventive Custody Period

Mumbai, July 8: The Maharashtra Legislative Council on Wednesday passed amendments to the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), extending the duration of preventive police detention from 24 hours to between 15 and 30 days. The Opposition staged a walkout in protest, alleging the changes could be misused.

The House also approved an amendment to Section 482 of the BNSS, making it mandatory for applicants seeking anticipatory or pre-arrest bail to appear before the court.

Opposition members urged the government to refer the bill to a select committee for detailed scrutiny, warning that the amendments could lead to abuse of power. Some legislators from the ruling alliance also voiced reservations over the proposed changes before the bill was passed.
