Bhubaneswar, June 26: Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari , on Wednesday said that the newly formed Odisha government would explore all possibilities to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute issue.
Revenue Minister Pujari, alleged that the previous BJD government did not take appropriate steps during its 24-year rule.
Pujari stated that the BJD never approached the appropriate forums for dispute resolution and did not discuss the issue with the neighboring state or the central government.
The new Odisha government, now ruled by the BJP, plans to engage with the Chhattisgarh administration and the Centre to present its stand at constitutional forums.
The BJP government, both at the Centre and in Odisha, aims to explore all possibilities to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute promptly.
With BJP governments in both states and at the Union level, there is hope for an easier resolution of this long-standing issue.
Mahanadi water dispute remains a critical challenge, but the current political landscape offers an opportunity for dialogue and resolution.
The Mahanadi water dispute has been a longstanding issue between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
The Mahanadi river flows through both Odisha and Chhattisgarh, and its water is crucial for irrigation, drinking, and industrial purposes in both states.
The root cause of the dispute is the construction of a reservoir on the Mahanadi by BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh, despite objections raised by Odisha, which is the lower-riparian state.
As a result, the inflow of water to Mahanadi in Odisha has reduced, leading to water scarcity and drying up of the river in several parts of the state
