New Delhi, May 6: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging an all-party dialogue on the caste census and suggesting the Telangana model as a reference.

He called for removing the 50% reservation cap through a constitutional amendment and the immediate implementation of Article 15(5) to ensure reservations in private educational institutions for SCs, STs, and OBCs.

Kharge emphasized that a caste census is essential for ensuring social justice and should not be viewed as divisive.

Recalling his earlier letter from April 2023, he noted the government's recent but vague announcement to include caste in the upcoming census. He also stressed that caste data should serve broader socio-economic goals, not just statistical purposes.
