Sachin Siwach wins historic boxing gold for India following comeback

Indian boxer Sachin Siwach earned his country's sixth boxing gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He defeated Namibian fighter Tryagain Morning Ndevelo through a tight 3-2 split decision on Saturday, August 1, in the men's 60kg final event.

Trailing on the judges' scorecards after the initial two rounds, Siwach launched a remarkable comeback in the final three minutes. This thrilling victory pushed India's overall gold medal count at the ongoing games to an impressive 12. Indian boxers have historically performed well at this global event, securing 11 gold medals across all previous editions before arriving in Glasgow.

Making History In Men's Boxing

Siwach is now the first Indian male pugilist to finish first at these current games. His success followed an outstanding winning streak by Indian women earlier that same Saturday. Five female boxers, including Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, and Arundhati Choudhary, also won top honors in their respective weight classes. Preeti Pawar opened the account in the women's 54kg division. Mohammed Ali Qamar set the standard for Indian boxing by claiming the very first Commonwealth Games gold in Manchester back in 2002. Later, exceptional athletes like Akhil Kumar in 2006, along with Suranjoy Mayengbam, Manoj Kumar, and Paramjeet Samota in 2010, continued this winning tradition.

India has a strong chance to increase its total boxing gold count to eight before the event concludes. Two additional male athletes, Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal, prepared to fight in their own championship bouts later on Saturday. Indian boxers failed to secure any first-place finishes during the 2014 Glasgow games, but they bounced back with three wins each in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
