Political crisis grips Poland following dramatic purge of Constitutional Court Judges

Sudden judicial suspensions trigger protests and diplomatic resignations in Poland

Polish leadership faced unprecedented turmoil on Friday evening when a rival judge abruptly sidelined the leaders of the nation's Constitutional Tribunal. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the removal of President Bogdan Swieczkowski and Vice President Bartlomiej Sochanski on the official court website just before it went offline. She justified the takeover by claiming her status as the longest-serving judge granted her authority to restore legal order.

Reacting swiftly, President Karol Nawrocki cancelled his diplomatic flight to Senegal mid-journey. He explained on social media that his presence was required in Poland during such critical moments, stating he was cutting short his trip. By Saturday morning, Nawrocki had marched into the barricaded court building alongside Supreme Court leader Zbigniew Kapinski.

Fierce Warsaw street demonstrations

Riot officers swiftly surrounded the judicial headquarters to manage growing crowds of protesters. Demonstrators gathered at the barricades and chanted slogans against Prime Minister Donald Tusk, labeling the leader a traitor. During the chaos, the official social media channel of the tribunal published a statement declaring the sudden overhaul a state coup. Former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro also condemned the events, urging citizens to mount a loud, firm, solidary, and fearless resistance against what he described as a criminal violation of the national constitution. Repercussions from the judicial upheaval quickly spread to international diplomatic circles. Polish Ambassador to China Jakub Kumoch formally stepped down from his post on Saturday. He stated that domestic developments made it impossible for him to continue representing the republic. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, currently attending the G20 Summit in the United States, confirmed the departure while publicly criticizing Kumoch for abandoning his mission unprofessionally.

Current government officials view these drastic measures as necessary institutional corrections. Prime Minister Tusk defended the actions on Friday, describing the transition as a difficult but obligatory step to reverse years of lawlessness under the previous Law and Justice administration. His pro-European coalition took office last year with promises to untangle political interference within the judiciary. This ongoing conflict previously resulted in severe financial penalties from the European Union. Swieczkowski, appointed during the conservative era, has faced repeated accusations of deliberately blocking the integration of new judges selected by the current parliamentary majority.
