Government approves Rs 1856 crore sports goods manufacturing initiative

Union Cabinet members, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme on Wednesday. Officials allocated Rs 1,856.67 crore for this initiative, which runs from 2026 to 2033-34. Government sources stated the project targets domestic production growth, increased exports, and greater innovation across the athletic equipment sector. India aims to capture a larger share of the international supply chain by reducing reliance on foreign imports and building localized industrial clusters. This strategic move aligns directly with the nation's broader goal of expanding its footprint in global sporting events and exporting high-value goods.

Building dedicated production zones

Policymakers plan to establish specialized Sports Goods Manufacturing Zones across the country. These designated hubs will group suppliers, testing centers, and design experts in single unified locations. Officials will integrate these areas with existing infrastructure networks, including NICDC Industrial Parks and the BHAVYA program. Grouping these facilities together helps businesses streamline their daily operations, build stronger supply links, and significantly lower logistics costs. Government strategies include Turnover Linked Support and Anchor Investment provisions, backed by Rs 1,130 crore in targeted funding. These specific financial tools will attract established global brands, large domestic manufacturers, and retail chains to set up factories domestically. Smaller enterprises also receive close attention under this framework. Dedicated funds are meant to upgrade existing micro and small equipment clusters by delivering modern shared facilities.

Driving international quality standards

Local producers often face barriers in global markets due to strict international quality controls. To resolve this challenge, officials set aside Rs 105 crore to help businesses secure and renew official certifications from International Sports Federations. Meeting these global performance standards ensures locally made equipment gains trust from overseas buyers and professional athletes alike.

Educational institutions will host new Centres of Excellence focused entirely on material sciences, protective gear, and modern production methods. This scientific approach links directly with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation to promote ongoing research. Furthermore, officials partnered with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to train young workers for specialized manufacturing roles, fulfilling the rising demand for qualified labor. Startups will also find dedicated backing through existing national initiatives to design, validate, and commercialize new athletic technologies. Ultimately, these integrated efforts aim to create new jobs and cement the nation's standing as a premier global manufacturing hub.
