Udhayanidhi Stalin detained in Chennai

Police took Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin into custody on Tuesday following a highly criticized public speech. Officers arrived at his Chennai residence shortly after registering a case over alleged sexual innuendos directed at actor Trisha. This incident occurred while the DMK leader was protesting against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay regarding the river water dispute. The Cauvery water allocation has historically remained an explosive political flashpoint in southern India, frequently sparking intense regional protests. Seeking legal relief, Stalin immediately approached the Madras High Court for anticipatory bail, expecting an afternoon hearing.

Political outrage over rally speech

Trouble began during the rally when someone in the crowd yelled the actor's name. Stalin paused and delivered a double-meaning response, which quickly ignited fury across rival political camps. TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna aggressively condemned the DMK leader, labelling him "Obscene Nidhi." Arjuna stated that such language destroys the foundation built by respected scholar Annadurai. He added that the comments show perverted thinking about women, insisting that no mother, sister, or parent in Tamil Nadu would ever accept such despicable speeches. TVK spokesperson Felix Gerald questioned whether the politician would repeat those exact words in front of his own son and daughter.

Rivals demand strict action while party defends

BJP officials also joined the fierce public backlash. State BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy described the rally statements as disgusting, obscene, vulgar, and shameful. He strongly demanded immediate police action.

Defending their leader, DMK members brushed off the uproar. Former minister T Mano Thangaraj described the backlash as manufactured hatred and selective fake news. He argued that opponents are simply using this situation to divert public attention from the struggles of delta farmers and the broader water crisis.
