Bhubaneswar, Dec 10: As festive celebrations approach, travelers face a major setback with airfares soaring to unprecedented levels. Ticket prices on routes like Bhubaneswar to Delhi and Bengaluru have surged to ₹11,000–₹23,000, a stark jump from the usual ₹6,000.
This sharp increase, driven by overwhelming demand and limited flight availability, has sparked frustration among passengers.
The middle class, once optimistic about affordable air travel under the 'Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik' initiative, now feels the pinch. "Flying has become a luxury again. I spent ₹11,500 for a Bengaluru-Bhubaneswar ticket—something I never expected," lamented Pravat Chinara- a frequent traveler. Many are now reconsidering trains as a more feasible alternative.
Interestingly, travel experts highlight that international destinations may cost less than domestic flights this season. They’ve called for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to step in and regulate the steep price hikes.
Despite the challenges, there’s a silver lining. Bhubaneswar airport reported an 8% increase in domestic passengers this October, and the launch of five new air routes in January is expected to ease the travel crunch and restore affordability.
